I am in my third year of grad school studying to get my doctorate in audiology. I saw your post and thought maybe I could add some insight. Speech Language Pathology(SLP) and Audiology have a vast amount of areas that you could work in regardless of which one you choose. For example, you can work with varies populations, choose to work in certain areas (SLP- stuttering patients, stroke patients, traumatic brain injury patients,etc... Audiologist- cochlear implants, dizzy patients, tinnitus patients,etc..) Pros SLP - provide therapy for their patients several times a week so they develop a bond with these patients. You are helping your patient to communicate better in order to help them to succeed in their daily lives. Cons- You must be very creative or organized to create therapy plans. Pros- Audiology- you help your patients to hear better in order to help them to enjoy what they have been missing. Cons-you have to get a doctorate in order to practice which is a total of four years in grad school (3 years in classes and 9 mos to 1 Year of externship). This is just a little about each but for me personally I graduated with a B.S. in speech pathology. Most undergrad schools do not have a separate degree to choose from in undergrad they will give you a little taste of both (usually more SLP than Audiology) so don't think you have to decide here and now that can be decided later when you know a little bit more. I found that I enjoyed audiology a little more because it was more science based and I did not have to do therapy everyday. I also minored in Deaf studies and fell in love with the culture and language. So you will know what to do when the time comes to choose. Good luck to you and God Bless, Carrie
